Parents: WE NEED YOU
For Parents' Eyes Only!
There are countless issues with teaching and learning in the virtual environment. I have conversations with colleagues, parents and friends about my concerns that sitting in front of an iPad for 6-hours each day will have on young people. Asking students to stare into a tablet all day is neither best-practice nor sustainable. If there is a silver-lining to be found in this educational cultural moment, it is certainly not in the delivery methods of our instruction, but rather in something more traditional: parent partnerships.
Public schools were not designed to take the place of the parent, and any affection toward the contrary tiptoes dangerously close to a disturbing future where the uniqueness of family and culture are ignored. There are extraneous circumstances where this is necessary, but the public school system is a best-fit model, and although efforts are made to ensure students’ academic, social, and other needs are met, it is vital for educators to firmly make the family the foundation for a successful future.
I have more to say on this, so stay tuned…
