Developing confidence in our kids

Have you ever experienced failure in something?

Perhaps it was a test, an assignment, or something more serious with higher stakes? It can be incredibly frustrating and debilitating; feelings of helplessness, doubt, and condemnation can quickly creep in and, as you know, it takes awhile to recover.

Imagine what it’s like being young person with reading difficulties. Their self-esteem and emotions fluctuate as they look around and see 90% of their peers succeeding. In addition to this, they have continual support from school staff, further setting them apart and raising (potential) issues of self-consciousness. No wonder they often give up and stop caring altogether!

​When we teach skills in this manner, we enter what is called the "Zone of Proximal Development" (ZPD, see Vygotsky). This is not to be confused with The Twilight Zone.

It is important to remember that we help students develop their skills by starting at 93-97% success to build confidence, self-esteem, and help them self-identify as successful learners, at whatever “level” they are learning.
